Starting this month, one episode on a whole book of the Bible. First up, Genesis 1 to 11.
In November 1872, a man named George Smith sat in a back room of the British Museum with a clay tablet in front of him. He’d left school at fourteen and taught himself to read cuneiform in his lunch breaks. That afternoon he read a story about a man told to build a boat, who filled it with his family and living creatures of every kind, who survived a flood, and who sent out birds to see whether the waters had gone down. The story goes that he leaped up, ran about the room, and started tearing off his clothes.
Some people took that discovery as the end of the Bible’s credibility. I take it the other way, and the new episode of the podcast explains why.
Here’s what’s changing. Most months I’ll keep doing what I’ve been doing, which is three podcast episodes on the questions we’re all living inside, things like manhood, addiction, contemplative prayer, church and state. And once a month I’m going to set the headlines aside and take a book of the Bible, working through the whole thing over the coming years, book by book, from Genesis to Revelation. You should finish each one able to pick that book up and read it with understanding.
The first is up now. It’s on Genesis 1 to 11, and it covers the seven days, the image of God, the garden, Cain, the flood, the Table of Nations, and Babel. I set Genesis beside the Babylonian texts it shares a world with, where the world is made from a dead goddess and human beings exist as the gods’ labor force. I face the hard passages directly, including the curse of Canaan, which was used for four centuries to justify slavery and apartheid. And I give you a four-week plan to read these eleven chapters yourself.
