ABOUT GRAHAM JOSEPH HILL OAM PHD
Welcome to my author and ministry website, a place for Jesus-centered resources that deepen integrity, wisdom, justice, mission, and faith.
I’m a disciple of Jesus Christ of Scottish and Irish descent, living in Sydney, Australia (born, raised, and living on the lands of the Gadigal, Dharug, and Wallumedegal peoples).
I’m an author, mentor, professional supervisor, and scholar of World Christianity, intercultural theology, and mission studies. I’ve been in ministry since 1988. Over the last thirty-six years, I’ve been involved in church planting, pastoring, theological education, professional supervision, and training people for ministry and mission.
I was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for “service to theological education and the Baptist Churches of Australia” in the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours.
I serve as Misson Catalyst for Church Planting and Mission Renewal with the Uniting Church in Australia, overseeing the planting of five new churches. I’m a former theological college provost and principal, associate professor at the University of Divinity, and founding Director of The Global Church Project. I’m an Adjunct Research Fellow and Associate Professor at Charles Sturt University in Australia and a Research Associate at the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, USA. I received my MTheol from the University of Notre Dame, Australia, and a PhD from Flinders University, Australia.
I’ve authored 15 books, edited 3 books, and written numerous journal articles and book chapters. My books include Global Church, Healing Our Broken Humanity (co-authored with Grace Ji-Sun Kim), Salt, Light and a City (two volumes), Holding Up Half the Sky, and Hide This in Your Heart (co-authored with Michael Frost). My writings have been translated into Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Spanish, and Portuguese.

I’ve served as a Visiting Scholar at the Korea Baptist Theological University and Seminary in South Korea and taught at numerous seminaries and universities throughout the Asia-Pacific. I also teach within the Doctor of Ministry program of Abilene Christian University in Texas. I serve on theological committees within the Asia-Pacific Baptist Federation and the Baptist World Alliance.
I have delivered lectures at educational institutions worldwide, such as Boston University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Hillsong College, Carey Baptist Theological College, Laidlaw College, Torch Trinity University, Korea Baptist University, Lipscomb University, Abilene Christian University, and Yonsei University. I have spoken at national and international gatherings of groups like World Vision, Compassion Australia, International Justice Mission, Christians for Biblical Equality, Common Grace, Christian Schools Australia, Australian Association of Mission Studies, Missions Interlink, Hillsong College, the Baptist World Alliance, Micah Global, WEC International, the Asia Pacific Baptist Federation, New Wilmington Mission Conference, and Our Daily Bread International.
I have served on the editorial committee for the book Christianity in Oceania (Edinburgh Companions to Global Christianity), published by Edinburgh University Press. I’ve served on the Executive of the University of Divinity, along with the Vice-Chancellor and other seminary Principals. I am the Editor-in-Chief of the Australian Journal of Mission Studies.
My main research areas include World Christianity trends, intercultural theology, mission studies, and themes in applied theology. I love thinking about Christian approaches to faith, life, and culture. I write about themes in biblical equality, biblical studies, systematic theology, mission, intercultural theology, and justice. I teach courses on Christian leadership, church revitalization, and missional and intercultural theology. My teaching areas also include spiritual formation and World Christianity. I often lecture on church health, leading through change and transition, and more. I teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses. I love supervising research Masters and Doctoral students.
The Baptist Churches of Australia ordained me in 2000. I have pastored and planted churches in Perth and Sydney. One of my great joys in ministry has been pastoring churches. I attend Wesley International Congregation in Sydney. This church is a healthy, missional, and Christ-centred church. I have the joy of being a frequent conference speaker in Australia and around the world.
I am the father of three beautiful daughters whom I adore. I love writing and research and spending time in a forest or by the sea.
“Graham Joseph Hill is one of the finest missional scholars in the world, and the only one dedicated to making the work of Christians in the Global South (Majority World) known to the West, and also one of the only ones who describes the work of others with meticulous care and fairness. When I think of world theologians today I think of Graham – and I don’t say that lightly. Yes, there are more famous scholars but there are none doing his admirable and noble work of mediating the voices of those who have been silenced by not being in the places of power. The work he has done, too, with defending women in ministry is singularly clear and effective, and my own students have found this new book of his most helpful. If I could invite one person to my school to be a professor of missional theology, it would be Graham Joseph Hill. No rivals for me.”
